In the 18th century, Hawaii's Kilauea belched a cloud of suffocating ash and gas that destroyed part of an army marching against King Kamehameha. On May 18, 1980, Washington's Mt. St. Helens blew its top, 1300 feet of it. The explosion was 27,000 times greater than the atom bomb that fell on Hiroshima in World War II. To most of us, volcanoes are frightening and mesmerizing. Some have been worshipped as gods, others as devils. Science sees them as proof that our planet is spunky, still kicking. The National Park System guards them as geologic monuments. People see them as destroyers, but volcanoes are really creators. They do not destroy the land; they transform it. This video reveals the fascinating story of America's volcanoes, most of which are only quiet, not dead. Included are: Mt. St. Helens and Mt. Rainier (Washington); Crater Lake (Oregon): Lassen (California); Katmai (Alaska); Kilauea, Mauna Loa, Haleakala (Hawaii); Sunset Crater (Arizona); Craters of the Moon (Idaho); and Yellowstone National Park (Wyoming, Montana, and Idaho). It's all here ... the immensity, diversity, and power of America's great volcanoes. VHS, PAL 55 mins ..... $24.95 |
